Decent work in nature-based solutions 2024
In 2022, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) began a biennial series of reports called Decent Work in Nature-based Solutions, coinciding with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration which runs till 2030. The first report was launched at the end of 2022 and the second report, through this present project, is scheduled to be launched in 2024. The next report “Decent work in Nature-based Solutions 2024” will summarize key developments since the 2022 report, and provide updated estimates of current and future employment linked to NbS. It will also examine the implications for Decent work from increased investment in NbS in infrastructure. Furthermore, it will assess current and future skills needs for NbS, both qualitative and quantitative, links to other skills for green jobs, and recommendations for building skills to meet the new demands including reskilling and upskilling. The link is now being made between NbS and the issues of Decent Work and Just Transition, since increased investment in NbS will have important implications for certain sectors of the economy and workers and enterprises in these future editions of the report will contain deep dives on the role of NbS in other sectors. The report will provide a concluding statement and recommendations for policymakers.
