Promoting decent work in the garment supply chains in Syria.
This intervention aims to enhance the competitiveness, job creation potential and working conditions in Syria's textile industry, targeting the entire garment supply chain (from cotton cultivation to export of textiles products) as an important lever to advance decent work in the country. This is achieved through strengthened institutional frameworks and stakeholder coordination. Implemented in Damascus and Aleppo as textile industrial hubs in the country, the intervention targets cotton farming and ginning/spinning mills, textile and garment enterprises, cotton farmers associations, employees in cotton textiles value chain actors, youth aged 15-25, with 350 persons including 140 women expected to be employed by at least 10 enterprises. The collaborating partners include Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, the General Federation of Trade Unions, the Chambers of Industry, local industry associations, farmers associations, UNDP, UNIDO and FAO. The expected results include the development and implementation of an integrated approach to decent work in the textile supply chain by the Damascus Chamber of Industry; and the development and adoption of a code of practice by the Government, in consultation with the social partners, to address decent work deficits and improve skills and working conditions in the textile sector.
