Improving the safety and health of workers involved in the construction of a high-speed rail system in Egypt: A Vision Zero Fund project
This 18-month project, funded by the Vision Zero Fund with a budget of USD 340,000, aims to enhance occupational safety and health (OSH) standards for workers involved in Egypt’s high-speed rail system construction. In collaboration with Siemens and its consortium partners, the International Labour Organization (ILO) seeks to implement improved OSH practices that benefit not only the project’s workforce but also the broader Egyptian construction sector. Objectives and Strategy: The project focuses on: 1. Collecting and validating data to identify OSH improvement areas. 2. Enhancing OSH training centers and curricula, including extending training beyond the high-speed rail project. 3. Establishing and strengthening workplace OSH management systems across the value chain. The project integrates gender equality and disability inclusion, ensuring all workers, including women and persons with disabilities, benefit from safer workplaces. Local stakeholders, including government bodies and social partners, will be involved in all project phases to ensure lasting impact. Progress will be monitored through ILO’s tools, and results will be disseminated globally via the Vision Zero Fund’s communication channels. This project is implemented in complementarity with one other project promoting a safe and healthy working environment for construction workers in Egypt, namely “Promoting a safe and healthy working environment for workers in vulnerable conditions in countries of the European Union's southern neighborhood - Phase 2”. Funded by the EU, this project will strengthen the labour inspection system to enforce and promote occupational safety and health in the construction sector. Both projects are implemented within the ILO global programme on OSH promotion, Safety + Health for All, in line with its overall strategy.
