Agrifood systems transformation in Mexico: Towards integral social protection and decent rural employment

The Joint SDG Fund has launched the “Agrifood Systems Transformation in Mexico: Towards Integral Social Protection and Decent Rural Employment” program, targeting structural improvements in Mexico’s agrifood sector. This one-year program from January to December 2025, with a budget for Internation Labour Organization is $104,143.00. The program is implemented in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization and International Labour Organization and seeks to improve rural livelihoods, reduce informality, and enhance social protection for agricultural day laborers and small-scale producers in rural Mexico. Focusing on addressing poverty and exclusion in rural areas, the program aims to build a comprehensive rural development policy that promotes decent work, secure livelihoods, and social inclusion, especially for marginalized groups. The program’s primary objectives include creating a multi-dimensional diagnostic tool for characterizing agricultural day laborers and small producers, mapping relevant social assistance policies, developing a regionally tailored agricultural model, and formulating a strategy to formalize rural labor. The program’s key components include establishing instruments for a comprehensive assessment of the socioeconomic conditions and needs of agricultural day laborers and small-scale producers, with a focus on disaggregating data by gender, ethnicity, and work conditions to inform targeted interventions. Additionally, it involves conducting an extensive analysis of current and past regulatory frameworks related to rural socioeconomic assistance, identifying gaps and opportunities to improve policies for inclusive development. Based on this information, the program develops a regionally specific agricultural-productive model, aimed at fostering sustainable agricultural practices that address the unique needs of migrant and local agricultural workers in different regions. Furthermore, the program creates guidelines and recommendations to promote formal employment and social protections for agricultural day laborers and small to medium-sized producers, emphasizing gender responsiveness and community engagement throughout the process.
