Rebuilding and strengthening agricultural livelihoods and shelter in Lao Cai province in response to Typhoon Yagi
The "Rebuilding and Strengthening Agricultural Livelihoods and Shelter in Lao Cai Province" project is a joint initiative by the FAO, ILO, IOM, and UNDP, aimed at supporting recovery efforts in response to Typhoon Yagi, which devastated northern Viet Nam in September 2024. This project focuses on livelihood restoration, shelter reconstruction, and resilience-building for the most affected and vulnerable populations, particularly women-headed households, ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities. The project addresses the extensive damage caused by the typhoon, which left 3.6 million people affected, 284,000 homes damaged, and significant agricultural losses. It aims to provide cash-for-work programs, agricultural inputs, shelter reconstruction, and social protection measures to help 2,000 targeted households recover sustainably. Special attention is given to gender equality, community empowerment, and disaster resilience through training and awareness initiatives. Implementation is carried out in Lao Cai province, a severely impacted area, in close coordination with local authorities, civil society organizations, and social partners. The program also incorporates a "Build Back Better" approach to strengthen future disaster preparedness, promote climate-smart agriculture, and improve early warning systems. Sustainability is a key focus, with efforts to enhance local capacities through training, monitoring, and knowledge-sharing. The project’s outcomes are expected to serve as a model for broader recovery and resilience-building efforts across Vietnam.
