Towards a safe and healthy working environment in North Macedonia

The project contributes to the realization, in law and practice, of the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment for all workers in North Macedonia. The project delivers strategically structured interventions leading to i) change of the legal and policy frameworks, ii) change in the organizational practices, and iii) increased knowledge and change in attitudes of the target groups, and ultimately to decrease of the number of occupational accidents, injuries and diseases. The project is addressing the most significant challenges to effectively improve workers’ well-being and productivity, in particular: i) Insufficient information on constraints and drivers for enhanced Occupational Safety and Health, (OSH), conditions, and inaccurate data on occupational fatalities, injuries and diseases; ii) Inadequate legislation, regulations and policies on OSH; iii) Lack of capacity necessary for prevention, compliance and enforcement related to OSH; iv) Insufficient awareness and understanding of occupational hazards and risks and the need for safe and healthy workplaces. The project aims to foster a transformative shift in occupational safety and health (OSH) across the country by establishing a robust and sustainable framework conducive to promoting safer and healthier working environment. Through the development of comprehensive systems and procedures, the project enhances labour inspection services and improves the effectiveness of OSH information management. By strengthening national capacities, the initiative ensures that workers in all sectors benefit from a heightened level of protection, contributing to a reduction in workplace accidents and illnesses, ultimately resulting in safer and healthier workers in North Macedonia. The project aims at achieving the following goals: National OSH framework conducive to the promotion of a safe and healthy working environment is in place; Systems and procedures for improved labour inspection services are in place; Improved OSH Information system and procedures are in place; National capacities to promote a safe and healthy working environment for all workers are strengthened.
