BETTER WORK and Industry Summit: Strengthening and updating compliance tools and approaches rooted in national labour laws and fundamental principles and rights at work
This project strengthens workplace compliance systems in the global garment sector by developing a new assessment tool based on national labour laws and international labour standards. Led by the ILO’s Better Work programme, and supported by 14 apparel brands from the Industry Summit, the initiative responds to a growing demand for credible, actionable data on labour rights and working conditions. The tool is to include a concise set of compliance data points, country-specific legal guidance for Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Viet Nam, and improved methodologies for data collection. Once available, these resources will help governments, employers, and workers identify gaps, align monitoring systems, and promote responsible business conduct. The project builds on previous collaborations and aims to reduce duplicative audits, improve regulatory coherence, and support sustainable compliance. It promotes national ownership by involving constituents in the design, piloting, and validation phases. The initiative contributes to decent work, gender equality, and stronger institutions, and supports broader development goals through transparency and shared learning.
