Haya Karima: Addressing Multidimensional Poverty in Egypt
The Haya Karima: Addressing Multidimensional Poverty in Egypt program is a four-year, €20.7 million initiative, with €19.8 million provided by the EU, focused on improving the quality of life for Egypt's rural population. Implemented by UNICEF, WHO, and the ILO, the program's overall objective is to improve the quality of life of the rural population affected by multidimensional poverty. This will be achieved through two specific objectives: enhancing access to and quality of health services and strengthening social protection systems. The action targets millions of beneficiaries, including children, pregnant women, retirees, and informal workers, through a combination of capacity building, infrastructure improvements, and community-based interventions. The first specific objective focuses on improving healthcare by upgrading the capacity of national health stakeholders and frontline workers, improving health facility infrastructure, and implementing awareness campaigns on health and nutrition. The second objective aims to strengthen social protection by supporting relevant authorities in extending benefits to disadvantaged groups, reinforcing cash transfer programs, and ensuring the sustainability of the universal health insurance system. This multifaceted approach is designed to create a more resilient and inclusive social and health framework to combat poverty and inequality in Egypt.
