Towards a more impactful and scalable Government-led Empowerment Program in Sri Lanka
The ILO in collaboration with UNDP provides support to a large scale World Bank project which improves the livelihoods and welfare of vulnerable households receiving social assistance and working informally, through holistic interventions that include upskilling, psychosocial support, business grants, and continuous coaching. The ILO, building on its extensive experience working with the most marginalized communities in the northern province of Sri Lanka, supports the development of private partnerships with the targeted communities to provide extension services and access to markets, focusing on the primary sector. Using a well-tested market system approach, the ILO provides sustainable livelihoods to a targeted 200 marginalized households. The ILO furthermore supports the World Bank to replicate the approach in a second location.
