Strengthen occupational safety and health (OSH) and notably the labour inspections in the Mediterranean Region – Phase III

Phase III of the project is fully aligned with the Union for the Mediterranean Roadmap for Employment and Work 2026–2028. It addresses key labour market challenges in the region, with a strong focus on young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs) and on facilitating the transition from informal to formal employment. Particular attention is given to women, who are disproportionately affected by informal work, limited access to employment contracts, insufficient social protection, and restricted enjoyment of fundamental labour rights. The project also emphasizes the strengthening of employment and social policy monitoring systems to enhance evidence-based policymaking. Improved monitoring will enable a more accurate assessment of the impact of public policies, particularly on young people and women, and support more inclusive and effective labour market reforms. In addition, Phase III is fully consistent with the EU Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work 2021–2027. It supports the promotion of occupational safety and health (OSH) standards at global and regional levels and reinforces cooperation with the International Labour Organization in implementing the 2019 Centenary Declaration on the Future of Work. The project contributes to advancing the recognition of the right to a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental labour right, while promoting bilateral and regional cooperation on OSH with the EU’s Eastern and Southern neighbours, including within the frameworks of the Eastern Partnership and the Union for the Mediterranean
