Comments and Observations: | ITF (20 October 2020) Commercial managers have dragged this out unnecessarily and have treated seafarers with contempt for months.
Govt. of Togo (3 December 2020) Regarding the ship Jolly Lizzy, currently at the Autonomous Port of Lome, it was subjected of protective seizure then to seizure and sale at the request of the sailors for non-payment of wages, and this after several unsuccessful attempts at conciliation between the ship-owner and the sailors on the initiative of the Maritime Affairs Department. Faced with this case of abandonment, the maritime administration assumed its responsibilities towards the sailors on board the ship Jolly Lizzy in accordance with Standard 2.5 of the MLC, to which Togo is a party. The administration covered the charges inherent in COVID-19 test and the repatriation of the four Ghanaian sailors to their country on 18th October 2020. Two Togolese sailors are currently on board to guard the ship. Legal proceedings in this case are ongoing and seek full payment of the wages of the prejudiced seafarers and other claims on the said vessel.
