The weights and selected items were derived from a household
expenditure survey conducted in August-September 1956 among
African wage earners' and salaried employees' families in
Abidjan, and relate to African families of four or five persons,
excluding families with more than three adults or more than one
wage or salary earner.

The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a
weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights
corresponding to August-September 1956.
Other information
A new series relating to African households, in which the head of the
household is either a wage earner, a qualified salaried employee or an
artisan in Abidjan, is now computed (base August 1984-July 1985 = 100).
The relevant methodological information was not available
in the ILO at the time the present volume was published.
