Scope

The index is compiled monthly and relates to middle-class households with a monthly budget of about 21,900 CFA francs and an average composition of 4.15 consumption units in 1964-65.

Source of weights

The weights and selected items were derived from a household expenditure survey conducted in Yaoundé during the period 1964-65, among 764 Cameroon households representing all urban consumers. Only middle-class households with a monthly budget of about 21,900 CFA francs and an average composition of 4.15 consumption units were taken into account in the computation of the index.

Method of data collection

Prices for most items are collected each month by agents or by mail questionnaire, from about 60 retail outlets and service establishments or from official documentation for those prices fixed by government authorities. In addition, certain food items are priced, through direct buying by agents on the 5th, 15th and 25th of each month in three public markets.

Seasonal items

Seasonal fluctuations in the prices of certain fruits are taken into account by pricing the items only when they are in season; during the off season, the relevant item weights are assigned to replacement items.

Computation

The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights corresponding to 1964-65.
