Source of weights
The weights and selected items were derived from a consumer expenditure
survey conducted in 1978 among a sample of 500 households representing
all income groups.

Household consumption expenditure
Consumption expenditure for the purpose of the index includes
almost all goods and services purchased by the index population,
including medical services and recreational goods.
Method of data collection
Prices are collected by agents during the second month of each
quarter from approximately 120 groceries, department stores and
other retail outlets and service establishments.
Housing
Rent quotations are obtained for dwellings with one to three
bedrooms.

Seasonal items are not included in the index.
Computation
The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a
weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights corresponding
to the base period.
The price relative for each item is computed by dividing the
average price for the current period by the average price for the base
period.
