Consumer Price Index at Yangon.
Scope
The index is compiled monthly and covers all households of all levels of
income in 1978. The index relates to the capital city, Yangon.
Official base
1978 = 100.
Source of weights
The weights and selected items were derived from the household
expenditure survey conducted in 1978, covering 1,200 households in 24
townships of the Yangon Division.

Household consumption expenditure
Consumption expenditure for the purpose of the index comprises
all goods and services purchased for consumption by the
population. It excludes income taxes, life insurance, gifts and
expenditures for ceremonies.
Method of data collection
Prices are collected from the selected markets located in the
area administered by Yangon City Development Committee.
Retail prices of commodities are collected each day while prices
of commodities under control are obtained once a month.
School fees and transport costs are obtained once a year from the
appropriate service establishments.
Housing
The weights for rent were obtained from the 1978 household
expenditure survey. The rent index is held constant at 100.
Specification of varieties
Specifications of items to be priced are given in terms of the
quality, brand name, size and unit, etc.
Substitution, quality change, etc.
If a product is no longer available on the market, it is
substituted by a similar product and the base year price of the
old product is revised.
Seasonal items
Adjustments are made for seasonal items such as fresh fruit and
vegetables to eliminate seasonal fluctuations.
Computation
The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a
weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights
corresponding to the base period.
Other information
A new series relating to Yangon (base 1986 = 100) is now computed but
the relevant methodological information was not available in the ILO at
the time the present volume was published.
