Source of weights

The weights and selected items were derived from a household expenditure survey conducted in Niamey from March 1961 to April 1962 among 317 African households.

Method of data collection

Prices for food and other items are collected by agents twice a month from five retail stores and four times a month from one market. Quotations for certain public services are obtained every month from official tariffs.

Rent is not included as an index item, nor is it taken into account in determining the weights.

Computation

The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights corresponding to March 1961-April 1962.
