Household consumption expenditure
Consumption expenditure for the purpose of the index does not include
income taxes, investment and savings, consumption from own production or
the imputed rent of the owner-occupied dwellings.
Method of data collection
Prices are collected on the 15th of each month, using mailed
questionnaires, from 50 retail outlets and service establishments
distributed throughout the territory according to population size.
Official tariffs fixed by the government are used for certain items and
services. The prices used in to calculate the index are the
normal prices paid by the consumers. Sale prices, discounts,
hire-purchase or credit terms and second-hand purchases are not
covered in the index.
Housing
Rent quotations are obtained twice a year for 50 privately rented
dwellings.
Specification of varieties
Detailed specifications are provided for each item included in the
market basket, comprising a complete description of the
item, its brand, name or trade mark, type of packing, quantity or unit,
etc.
Substitution, quality change, etc.
If a product is not available, a product similar to the original is
substituted and a method of linking is used.
Seasonal items
Fresh fruit and vegetables are treated as seasonal items. A
typical seasonal market basket is constructed for these items for each
of the twelve months.
Computation
The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a weighted
arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights corresponding to 1992.
The price relative for each item is calculated by dividing the
average price for the current period by the average price for the
previous period.
Other information
Detailed sub-group indices are published.
