Official tariffs fixed by the government are used for certain items and services. The prices used in to calculate the index are the normal prices paid by the consumers. Sale prices, discounts, hire-purchase or credit terms and second-hand purchases are not covered in the index.

Housing

Rent quotations are obtained twice a year for 50 privately rented dwellings.

Seasonal items

Fresh fruit and vegetables are treated as seasonal items. A typical seasonal market basket is constructed for these items for each of the twelve months.

Computation

The index is computed according to the Laspeyres formula as a weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights corresponding to 1992.

The price relative for each item is calculated by dividing the average price for the current period by the average price for the previous period.
