Scope
The index is compiled monthly and relates to Senegalese
households in Dakar with a monthly income of less than 100,000
CFA francs in 1960-61.

Source of weights
The weights and selected items were derived from a household expenditure
survey conducted in Dakar in 1960-61 among Senegalese households with a
monthly income of less than 100,000 CFA francs at the time of the
survey.

Method of data collection
Prices for food items are collected weekly, by agents, from
retail outlets and from six markets in Dakar. Prices for other
items are obtained during the second half of each month.
Quotations relating to service items are obtained from official
tariffs. No account is taken of sale prices.
Housing
Rent data for
recent dwellings with two rooms are obtained from a large real-estate
company.
Specification of varieties
The specifications describe the variety, quality, make, brand,
unit, etc.
Substitution, quality change, etc.
If an item disappears from the market, its price is used for a
maximum of three months. The item is then replaced by a
similar item for which a fictitious base price is calculated.
Seasonal items
Seasonal fluctuations in the prices of certain items are taken into
account by maintaining the closing prices of the preceding season during
the off season.
Computation
The index is compiled according to the Laspeyres formula as a
weighted arithmetic average with fixed base, using weights
corresponding to 1960-61.
