Official title
Consumer Price Index.
Scope
The index is computed monthly for the population as a whole and
separately for the urban and rural population.
Official base
Not available.
Sources of weights
The weights and items are derived from the results of a family
budget survey carried annually on a sample of about 4,000
households of various types. Weights are updated annually.

Sample selection
Outlets are selected in such a way that the results of the
selection reflect local features of trade as
accurately as possible, in particular in order to ensure
representation of outlets located in various parts of the town
and differing in size (large, medium-sized and small), as well as
different forms of ownership.
The item selection includes not
specific representative goods and services, but groups of goods
and types of services which are homogeneous in terms of their
composition and their role in consumption. Specific goods and
services representative of each group of goods and each type of
service are selected by the price collectors directly. The
selection of representative goods and services involves
identifying seven or eight items that can represent the entire
range of goods and services in each group.
Method of data collection
Prices are collected monthly, between the 10th and the 20th day
of each month. However, information on prices in a given outlet
in a current month is collected on one of the four calendar days
which follow the day of price collection during the previous
month. If during the reporting there is no price for an item at
a given outlet, the price for that item must be recorded at
another outlet where it is available. However, this price is not
included in the calculation of the index for that month; it will
be used the following month.
For each item two or three prices
are recorded in a variety of shops or service points in the town
centre and on the town periphery, as well as three or four prices
for various housing estates. Prices of the services are
collected in those enterprises offering the widest range of
services.

Specification of varieties
Specifications of goods are sufficiently broad and comparability
criteria are not too strict.
Substitution, quality changes
The price collectors specify whether the new variety of the item,
selected for substitution, is comparable to the old one.
Usually, goods are considered to be comparable if there is no
significant difference in their qualities which determine their
price.
Seasonal items
For seasonal goods, and also non-seasonal goods which are not
available between one and several months per year, the
price-collector notes on the form that the good is not available
for sale. The last recorded price is not noted on the form. The
index for that item is imputed using the group's index to which
that item belongs.
Computation
Consumer Price Index has been introduced in Uzbekistan in January
1994 with the assistance of the IMF. The modified Laspeyres
formula, with the weights of the previous year, is used.
