History of the survey

The Annual Survey of Industry was introduced in 1975. For the period 1975-1984, the 1974/75 sampling frame from the Manufacturing Industry Census was used. The sampling frame was renewed in 1986 and 1991. Manufacturing industries which, in the 1974/75 census, were found to be commercially operated with at least 20 employees, have been consistently covered during the period 1974-1984, regardless of the number of employees which might be lower than 20 persons. On the other hand, manufacturing industries which, in the 1974/75 census were found to be operated with less than 20 employees, were consistently excluded from the survey during that same period. Manufacturing establishments which fall under the first category have been recorded in the Directory of Large and Medium Manufacturing Industry. Since 1988, the frame covers manufacturing establishments with 20 or more persons engaged, irrespective of their initial employment size.
