Periodicity of the survey
The survey is carried out each month, with information collected for two
consecutive months.
Objectives of the survey
- to ascertain the trend of changes in the volume of the labour force
in three sectors of the economy: manufacturing, trade and services,
- to ascertain the causes of increased or reduced employment, by
branch of economic activity, sex and occupational category, and
- to obtain statistical information on managerial bodies and manpower
planners for the analysis of human resources.

Concepts and definitions
Employment
Employees are persons who are employed by an enterprise or
employer and receive a wage or remuneration in return for the work they
perform. Persons who are on vacation and workers on leave or on paid
sick leave are included.
Home workers, persons paid in foreign currency, professionals paid by
the hour and freelance workers on commission are excluded.
The information is requested separately by occupational category (manual
and non-manual workers).

Statistical unit
The reporting unit is the enterprise, including all branches
or establishments located in the metropolitan area of Lima.
Survey universe / sample frame
This was based of the summary of payrolls provided to the Ministerio de
Trabajo y Promoción Social by enterprises of the metropilitan area of
Lima in June 1993.
Sample design
The survey is a census of all enterprises with 100 or more workers.
Field work
Data collection
This is carried out by means of a questionnaire, sent by post. These
are sent out in the last week of each month and should be completed in
the first 15 days of the following month. The telephone is also used
when the deadlines are running out; in this way the respondent is
reminded of the need for the information.

Data processing and editing
Evaluation of the questionnaires is simple and consists of verifying the
totals and comparing the results with data from previous months, which
are recorded in a register. Inconsist data are followed up by
telephone. This stage takes place when the forms are received, and is
intended to ensure that the information on the forms is coherent and
complete. The information is processed by electronic computer systems
and is stored on diskette for incorporation in a database which is used
for subsequent analysis.
