Concepts and definitions

Employment

Employees encompass all persons who are registered by their main employment, whether permanent or temporary, on a full- or part-time basis.

Employment data are compiled and processed quarterly.

Earnings

Data refer to gross monthly earnings of employees, before deduction of employees' income and other taxes, contributions to social security and pension schemes, union dues and other employees' obligations. They include all wages and salaries for time worked or work done, remuneration for time not worked, commissions, allowances, regular bonuses and premiums and bonuses and gratuities paid irregularly, in cash and in kind.

Data on earnings are compiled and processed monthly.

Wage / salary rates

They refer to basic wage and salary rates for normal hours of work.

Hours of work

Data on normal hours of work are collected quarterly. Statutory hours were set at 41 hours per week until May 1997; since then, they have been reduced to 40 hours per week. In certain arduous occupations, normal hours of work are limited to 35 hours per week.

The data are classified according to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) industrial classification.

The observation unit is the enterprise, organisation or institution.

The survey is based on a complete enumeration of enterprises, organisations and institutions within the scope of the survey. Labour Reports are transmitted and received by post.

A Survey on wages and hours of work by occupation is conducted annually. It covers basic wage and salary rates and normal hours of work for a limited number of occupations within specific economic activities.
