Concepts and definitions:

Employment:

Employed persons are all persons aged 15 years and over who, during the reference week, were in any of the following categories:
  1. persons at work, either in paid or self-employment, who have worked one hour or more for wages or salaries in cash or in kind, or for profit or family income in cash or in kind;
  2. persons with a job but not at work, i.e. persons who have already worked in their present job (either in paid or self-employment) but were absent from work during the reference week and had a formal job attachment.
Also included in the employed are:
  1. persons with a job but temporarily absent from work because of illness or injury, maternity or parental leave, holidays, training or interruption of work due to economical or technical reasons, bad weather, breakdowns, etc.;
  2. persons who performed some work for pay or profit during the reference week, while being subject to compulsory schooling, or retired and receiving a pension, or registered as job seekers at an employment office or receiving unemployment benefits;
  3. full and part-time workers seeking work during the reference week;
  4. full or part-time students working full or part-time;
  5. paid apprentices and trainees;
  6. paid and unpaid family workers;
  7. private domestic servants;
  8. participants in employment promotion schemes who receive payment or on-the-job training;
  9. Career and paid volunteer members of the armed forces.
Excluded are unpaid apprentices and trainees, persons engaged in their own housework and those doing unpaid community or social work; these persons are classified as inactive.

Unemployment:

All persons aged 15 years and over who were:
  1. without work during the reference week;
  2. available for work within four weeks;
  3. actively seeking work, i.e. had taken specific steps (such a continued registration on the employment office records, contacts with private work agency, etc.) in the last four weeks, or had made arrangements to start a new job.
It also includes the full time and part time students seeking full time or part time work. Persons without work, available for work but not looking for work and who report that no work is available, are excluded from the unemployed and classified as discouraged workers.

All employed persons who either work part time because they have not been able to find a full time job and are looking for another job or persons working less than 40 hours during the reference week and are looking for another job.
