Concepts and definitions:

Employment:

All persons aged 14 years and over who have worked for at least one hour during the reference week, for pay, profits or family earnings, in cash or in kind. Are also included persons who have a job but were temporarily absent from work, but maintaining a formal job attachment, for reasons such as illness, maternity, holidays, etc.

Also included are persons:

  1. with a job but temporarily absent due to reasons such as illness or injury, vacation or annual leave, maternity/paternity leave, absence without pay or due to bad weather, mechanical breakdown, etc. as well as persons on lay-off without pay or on unpaid leave initiated by the employer within 30 day and workers seeking other work during the reference period;
  2. persons who performed some work for pay or profit during the reference period but were subject to compulsory school, retired and receiving a pension, registered at an employment office or receiving a pension;
  3. full or part-time students working full or part-time, paid apprentices and trainees, participants in subsidized employment promotion schemes;
  4. unpaid family workers.

Unemployment:

All persons aged 14 years and over who, during the reference period, do not have a job or a formal job attachment, but are available to work for pay or running a business and have sought work during the last month. Seeking steps may be: seek assistance through relatives or friends, registration at an employment agency, place or answer newspapers advertisements, direct application to employers, checked at work places, look for factory equipment, finance or license to start own business.

Also included in the unemployed:

  1. persons on lay-off with or without pay for more than 30 days;
  2. full and part-time students, available for work, seeking full or part-time work.

Employed persons who, regardless of their employment situation, worked involuntary less than 35 hours during the reference period, and have sought or are available to take an additional work.
