Employment:

Employed are all those, aged 15 years and over who, during the reference week:
  1. had worked for earnings or benefits (in cash or in kind) for at least one hour;
  2. while not working, they had a job and maintain a formal link with it;
  3. owned a business but were absent from work for a certain reason;
  4. were pre-retired but were working during the reference week.
Also included in the employed are:
  1. persons with a job but temporarily absent due to illness or injury, during 3 months maximum, annual leave, maternity/paternity or parental leave, education or training leave, labour management dispute, bad weather, mechanical breakdown;
  2. on unpaid leave initiated by the employer or on lay-off with or without pay during 3 months maximum;
  3. full or part-time workers seeking other work during the reference period;
  4. persons who performed some work for pay or profit during the reference week while subject to compulsory schooling, retired and receiving a pension, registered as jobseekers at an employment office or receiving unemployment benefits;
  5. full and part-time students working full or part-time;
  6. paid apprentices and trainees;
  7. participants in employment promotion schemes;
  8. unpaid family workers;
  9. seasonal workers, if the season is starting within 3 months;
  10. volunteers and career members of the armed forces.

Unemployment:

Persons aged 15 years and over who were not working during the reference week, were available for work within two weeks, were seeking work (i.e. had taken specific steps to seek employment) during the last four weeks or were not working nor searching but have found a job to start within 3 months.

Are also included in the unemployed:

  1. persons who were seeking and/or available for work while being subject to compulsory schooling or retired and receiving a pension;
  2. full and part-time students seeking full or part-time work and immediately available for work. Specific steps to find a job are as following: contacts with public employment office or private agency (temporary work agency, firm specialized in recruitment, etc.); applications to employers; seeking assistance from friends, relatives, unions, etc.; placing, answering or studying job advertisements; taking a recruitment test or examination or being interviewed; looking for land, premises or equipment; applying for permits, licences or financial resources.
