Employment:

Persons, 15 years old and over, who were worked even for one hour during the reference week in return for reward, wage or family earning, or who were temporarily away from work because of leave or sickness. (Questions on economic characteristics are however addressed to all persons 6 years of age and older.)

It includes:

  1. Persons who performed some work for pay or profit during the reference week but were subject to compulsory schooling, retired and receiving a pension, registered as jobseekers at an employment office, or receiving unemployment benefits.
  2. Full or part-time students working full or part-time.
  3. Paid and unpaid apprentices and trainees if associated with work.
  4. Persons engaged in production of goods for own final use.
  5. Unpaid family workers at work or temporarily absent from work during the reference week.
  6. Members of the armed forces including conscripts, volunteers and career officers, and persons engaged in civilian service equivalent to military service.
Excluded are:
  1. Persons engaged in production of services for their household.
  2. Persons on temporary or indefinite lay-off without pay and persons on unpaid leave initiated by the employer.

Unemployment:

Persons, 15 years old and over, not employed during the reference week, who were capable and ready to work within two weeks of the date of the interview, and have taken steps to search for work during the month prior the survey period.

  2. Persons without work and current available and looking for work who had made arrangements to start a new job on a date subsequent to the reference week.
  3. Persons without work and currently available and looking for work trying to establish their own enterprise.
