  • Being without work (S);
  • Seeking work (R);
  • Availability for work (R);
  • Age (lower limit: 15 years; upper limit: 55 years) (R) and (S);

  • Being resident in the country (R);
  • Previously employed (R);
  • Desired duration of employment and/or number of hours of work sought (minimum duration of work sought of eight to ten hours per day) (R).

  • Death (R) and (S);
  • Taking up residency abroad (R);
  • Commencement of a (new) job (R) and (S);
  • Commencement of military service (R) and (S);
  • Participation in an employment promotion scheme, public works programme, etc (R) and (S);
  • Studying or undergoing training (R);
  • Failure to contact the agency/service (R);
  • Refusal of suitable job offers (R);
  • Refusal of suitable training offers (R);
  • End of entitlement to receive unemployment compensation (R);

    6.Definition of unemployed persons used for the statistics

    Unemployed persons are persons looking for work who have not worked during a specified reference period. It may, in certain circumstances, refer to the extreme cases of underemployment.

    7.Updating of the registers

    The registers are updated quarterly.

    8.Unemployment rates

    Statistics from the registers are used to obtain unemployment rates.

    The sources of data on employed persons who are part of the denominator of the unemployment rates are the Labour Force Survey, Establishment Survey, Social Security Register and Population Census.

    Definition of employed persons for this purpose:

    Persons earning money or the equivalent for producing marketable goods and services; including wage and salary earners, employers, self-employed and unpaid family workers.
