Coverage

Geographical: Whole country.

Industrial: All major divisions of economic activity according to the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (ISIC-1958) are covered. Some regrouping of the major divisions is carried out to make the series compatible with ISIC-1968.

Occupational: All occupational groups are covered according to a national classification based on the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-1968).

Establishment: All sizes and types of establishments.

Persons covered: All workers 16 years of age and above. Data classified according to sex have been available since 1980.

Periodicity

The employment series is annual and started in 1963.

Definitions

Employment: All persons who are insured are defined as employed. The insurance is done by weeks and takes into account whether persons are working full-time or less. Persons working full-time during the whole year are insured for 52 weeks (with no account taken of overtime in the same job). The annual data are represented in terms of the complete "number of work-years".

Hours of work: Not applicable.

Wages: Not applicable.

Reference period

Not applicable because the annual figure is the complete number of work-years.

Methods of data collection, estimation and adjustment

The data are obtained from the individual income tax returns of paid employees and from special "wage" returns of employers and of self-employed persons, which are sent in to the Director of Internal Revenue each year. From the income tax registers a register of the total number of insured work-weeks by major divisions of industry according to ISIC-1958 is prepared. The figures are then evaluated by comparison with earlier years; additional information may be obtained directly from larger establishments and the figures adjusted on this basis. The number of work-weeks is converted into work-years by dividing by 52. Some regrouping of the ISIC-1958 divisions is carried out to make the series more compatible with ISIC-1968.

Changes in the series

Not available.
