employees covered by the Factories Act, 1934, and the Wages Act, 1936.

NWFP: 76 selected occupations within the 29 industry groups.

Concepts and definitions

Employment:

employees are persons employed for wages in any manufacturing process or for a business or establishment.

Full-time workers are those employed for the number of working hours specified by laws.

Earnings:

refer to net daily and monthly earnings, after deduction of employees’ social security contributions - provided these earnings are above the threshold of Rs. 2,500.00 per month. They include direct wages in cash for time worked or work done, and cost-of-living, housing and transport allowances. Payments in kind are excluded.

Earnings data are collected separately for wage earners, salaried employees and full-time employees.

Wage rates:

refer to basic daily and monthly wage/salary rates, including cost-of-living allowance and other guaranteed and regularly paid allowances - provided these rates are above the threshold of Rs. 2,500.00 per month. Wage rates in kind are excluded.

Wage/salary rates are collected separately for wage earners, salaried employees and full-time employees.

Hours of work:

refer to normal hours of work as fixed by laws or regulations. Normal hours of work are fixed at 48 hours per week and 9 hours per day, as defined under Sections 34 and 36 of the Factory Act, 1934, and under Section 7 of the West Pakistan shops and establishments Ordinance, 1969.
