1960, 1974, 1984, and 1992 and 2001. The present description relates to the 2001 population census (held on May 9th).

3. Coverage of the census:

(a) Geographical scope:  Whole country.

(b) Persons covered:  All persons of all ages.

4. Reference period:

The week preceding the census day.

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of age at last birthday.

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population:  It comprises all persons aged 15 years and over who, during the reference period, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below. The definition also includes members of the police force.

(b) Employment:   Employment is determined on the basis of the question: “Did you do any kind of work for pay or profit during the week 2 – 9 May 2001 for any length of time, including helping in a family business, fishing or work for profit at home?”.

It is reported that the following categories are included:

 

i)         employed persons, temporarily absent from work;

ii)        working students with a part time job;

iii)       seasonal or occasional workers;

iv)       conscripts for military/civilian service;

v)         apprentices and trainees.

 

None of these categories can be identified separately.

(c) Unemployment:  Considered as unemployed are all persons who were without work and looked for work.

7. Classifications used:

Only employed persons are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.

(a) Industry:  Based on the questions:  “What kind of business did this person work in, e.g. hotel, restaurant, supermarket, gas station?“ andWhat is the name of this person’s usual workplace?”.   For coding industry, ISIC-rev.3 was used to the tabulation category (1-digit) level.

(b) Occupation:  Based on the question: “What was this person’s main occupation last week?”.   ISCO coding at the 3-digit level was used.

 

(c) Status in employment:  For coding this variable, six groups were used, namely:  Paid employee – government;  Paid employee – private;  Paid employee-statutory body;  unpaid worker;  own business with paid help;  own business without paid help.  Those with more than one kind of employment could check more than one group.

 

(d) Level of education:  Based on the question: ”What is the highest formal level of education that this person has attained?”.   For coding this variable ten levels were used, namely:  Day care/preschool;  Primary Grade (Years 1 - 3);  Primary Grade (Years 4 - 7);  Some secondary;  Completed High School;  University W.I. Extramural/college;  US university college;  University W.I./UK or equivalent;  Other (Specify …………………);   None.

9. Publication of the census results:

The census results were published in 2002 in five volumes entitled as follows:

- Economic Activity;

- Demography, culture, migration, crime and fertility;

- Health;

- Housing and households;

- Education and training.
