7. Classifications used:

Employed persons were classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment while all economically active persons were classified by educational level.

(a) Industry:  Based on the question “What is the type of economic activity of your main job, organization, institution (or its branch)?”.  For coding industry, the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community, NACE (adopted by the State Standard of Armenia and approved for utilization by the State Council on Statistics) was used.

(b) Occupation:  Based on the question “What is your occupation at the main work place (type of main activities at work place)?”.  For coding occupation, the “Model Dictionary of Occupations” (designed by the Statistical Committee of the CIS and approved for utilization by the State Council on Statistics of Armenia) was used.

(c) Status in employment:  This variable was coded according to the following eight groups: Employee; Employer; Member of producer’s cooperative; Individual entrepreneur; Own account worker; Contributing family worker; Member of agricultural farm; Not classifiable by status.

(d) Level of education:  For coding level of education, the following groups of the national classification were used: Doctor of Science; PhD; Postgraduate professional; Higher professional; Incomplete higher; Secondary professional; Primary professional; General basic; Primary; No primary education.  Persons indicating “No primary education” were asked the following additional question “Are you literate?  Yes/No”.  No links to ISCED have been established.

8. Main differences compared with the previous census:

In 1989, questions concerning a person’s economic characteristics were asked only to a population sample (25% of dwellings).

In 2001, the category of unemployment and the status in employment classification were introduced.  Also, the definition of employment was revised on the basis of international recommendations.
