Re (a): The age is defined in terms of date of birth, year of birth and age at last birthday.
Re (h): The census also collected information on labour force participation level, crude activity rate, specific activity rate and workers’ marital status.
It comprises all persons aged 10 years and over who during the reference week were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below.
Considered as employed are all persons who during the reference week performed an economic or gainful activity, including the armed forces and homemakers carrying on small-scale activities on their allotments or leased plots. The question used to determine whether a person should be counted as employed was: Did you work from 15 to 21 December 1984? Persons who answered yes were counted as employed, as were those who answered no but then replied yes to the question: Were you on leave during that week?
It is reported that the following categories are included:
i) persons doing unpaid work in a family firm or business;
ii) persons engaged in production for own consumption;
iii) persons temporarily absent from work;
iv) seasonal or occasional workers;
v) conscripts for military/civilian service;
vi) apprentices and trainees.
Considered as unemployed are all persons who during the reference week were without work, available for work and seeking paid or gainful employment. Included in the definition are persons looking for their first job and persons who had previously worked and were looking for another job. To determine whether a person should be counted as unemployed, the same questions as indicated under 6(b) were used. Persons who answered no to both those questions were asked the questions: Were you looking for work during the reference week? and, if yes: Have you previously worked?
Both employed persons and unemployed persons who have previously worked are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.
Based on the question: What is (was) the main economic activity of the enterprise, company or institution where you work (worked)? For coding industry, nine groups of the national classification were used.
Based on the question: What is (was) your main job? For coding occupation, eight groups of the national classification were used.
Based on the questions: Do (did) you work on your own account?; if yes: Do (did) you employ paid staff?; if no: Are (were) you paid in cash or in kind for your work? For coding status in employment, the following groups were used: self-employed person; employer; paid employee; family helper; apprentice; other.
Based on the questions: Have you attended a pre-school or educational establishment?; if yes: At what grade did you stop? For coding level of education, the following groups were used: pre-school; primary; general secondary; technical and vocational secondary; general higher education; technical higher and professional education.
No major differences.
The census results appeared in September 1992 in Recensement Général de la Population et de l’Habitat de 1984 (RGP.11.84):
