1981, 1993 and 2003. The present description relates to the 2003 census (held between 1 and 31 December 2003).

Whole country.

Entire population with the exception of diplomats and nationals living abroad.

The month of October 2003 for economic activities.

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of age at last birthday.

Re (h): The census also collected information on literacy; trade or occupation initially learnt; disabled population (type and cause of disability); ethnicity or nationality and religion.

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population

It comprises all persons aged 10 years and over who during the reference period were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below. All members of the armed forces are included in the definition but working students with a part-time job and students seeking work are excluded.

(b) Employment

Considered as employed are all persons who stated that they had a job during the reference period. The question used was: Did you work during October 2003?

Counted as employed are:

i) persons who performed a paid or gainful occupation during the reference period;

ii) persons who had a job but were not at work during the reference period for reasons of vacation, health, etc.;

iii) persons who worked on their own account during the same period (self-employed persons);

iv) persons who employed paid labour;

v) unpaid family helpers;

vi) women who engaged in farm work or any other economic activity during the same period.

(c) Unemployment

Considered as unemployed are all persons who have previously worked at least once and who were without work or seeking work during October 2003. The question used is the same as that indicated under 6(b) above.

7. Classifications used:

Both employed persons and unemployed persons who have previously worked are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.

(a) Industry

The question asked refers to the main activity or branch of activity of the enterprise or establishment where a person worked during the reference period. For coding industry, the national classification was used. Links to ISIC Rev.3 have not been established.

(b) Occupation

Based on the question: What is your current job, i.e. the occupation you performed during October 2003? For coding occupation, the national classification was used. Links to ISCO-88 have been established to the minor group (3-digit) level.

(c) Status in employment

Based on the questions: Do you work on your own account?; if yes: Do you employ staff whom you pay in cash or in kind?; if no: Are you paid or remunerated for your work?; if no: Do you work for a family member or are you learning a trade with no remuneration or are you on a voluntary training scheme? For coding this variable, six groups were used: employer; paid employee; self-employed person; family helper; apprentice; other.

(d) Level of education

Based on the question: What is the highest educational level you attained? For coding this variable, the following groups were used: (1) pre-school; (2) primary; (3) lower general secondary; (4) upper general secondary; (5) lower technical secondary; (6) upper technical secondary; (7) higher education; (8) vocational education. Two further questions on education were asked: What is the last grade you attended in relation to the level stated in answer to the first question? and What is the highest qualification you have obtained and in what field?

8. Main differences compared with the previous census:

The census will make it possible to meet information needs in relation to new issues concerning project management, combating poverty, etc. This explains the appearance of new topics such as disabled population, status of children, status of women and status of older persons.

9. Publication of the census results:

The results of the census are not yet published. The census data are currently being processed.
