1960, 1970, 1981, 1991 and 2001. The present description relates to the 2001 population census (held on 25 May).

(b) Persons covered:  All persons of all ages.

The week prior to the census day.

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of age at last birthday.

 

Re (g):  Hours of work relate to the actual number of hours of employed persons.

 

Re (h): The census also collected information on means of transport to travel to work.

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population:  It comprises all persons aged 15 years and over who, during the reference week, were either employed or unemployed according to the definitions given below. Members of the armed forces are included in the definition.

(b) Employment:  Employment is determined on the basis of the questions: “What did you do most during the past week? For example did you work, look for a job, keep house or carry on some other activity?” and “Did you do any work at all last week for any length of time, including helping in a family business/farm, street vending or work at home?”.

It is reported that the following categories are included:

 

i)         persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business;

ii)        employed persons, temporarily absent from work;

iii)       working students with a part-time job.

 

All persons belonging to these categories can be identified separately.

(c) Unemployment:  The questions used to determine unemployment were the same as those indicated under 6 (b) above.  Considered as unemployed were the persons who, during the reference week, were without work and looked for a job.

7. Classifications used:

Both employed persons and unemployed persons previously employed are classified by industry and by occupation. Only employed persons are classified by status in employment.

(a) Industry:  Based on the questions: “What kind of business is/was carried on at your workplace?” and “What is the name and address of your present workplace?”.  For coding industry, ISIC-rev.3 was used.

(b) Occupation:  Based on the question:What sort of work do you/did you do in your main occupation?”.  For coding occupation, ISCO-88 was used to the unit group (4-digit) level.

(c) Status in employment:  Based on the question:  “Do you work for a wage, carry on your own business or as an unpaid?”.  For coding status in employment, six groups were used, namely: work in a family business; paid employee (Government); paid employee (private); unpaid worker; own business with paid help (employer); own business without paid help (own account).

(d) Level of education:  Based on the question: “What is the highest formal level of education that has been obtained?”.  For coding educational level, the following ten groups were used: Day-care/Nursery; Pre-School; Infant; Primary Grade/Standard (1-3 years); Primary Grade/Standard (4-7 years); Secondary; Pre-University/Post Secondary/College; University;  Other (please specify);  None.

8. Main differences compared with the previous census:

No major difference.

9. Publication of the census results:

The preliminary results of the 2001 Census can be obtained from the Central Statistical Office, Financial Complex, The Carenage, St. George's.  The final results will be published during 2003. 

 

The organization responsible for the publication of the results is the Central Statistical Office.
