The present description relates to the 2002 population census (conducted on 17
January).

persons of all ages in territories under the control of the central authorities
of Georgia.

The age is defined in terms of day, month and year of birth.
Re (h):
The census also collected information on main sources of livelihood,
nationality and marital status.
6. Concepts and definitions:
(a) Economically active
population: Persons aged 15 years and over employed in income
generating useful work. The share of the economically active population
mainly depends therefore on the share of the labour capacitated population in
the total population of the country. Members of the armed forces are
included in the definition with the exception of persons on compulsory military
service.
(b) Employment: Based on
the questions: “Sources of
livelihood” and “Main activity or occupation”.
Considered as employed is the labour capacitated population which is
engaged in economic activity, i.e. has paid job or income generating business.
(c) Unemployment: Considered
as unemployed are all persons aged 15 years and over who, during the survey
week, were without work, had been actively seeking work for the past two weeks
and if successful were ready to start work within the next two weeks.
7. Classifications used:
Employed persons are classified by
occupation and by status in employment. Both employed and unemployed
persons are classified by educational level.
(a) Industry: No
classification was made by industry.
(b) Occupation: Based on
the question “Main activity or
occupation”. For coding occupation, ISCO-88
was used.
(c) Status in employment: Based on
the question “Sources of
livelihood”.
(d) Level of education: Based on
the question “Educational level?”. For coding educational
level the following nine categories were used: Higher; Unfinished higher;
Secondary vocational; Primary vocational; Secondary complete; Basic general;
Primary general; Has no primary education but can read and write;
Illiterate. A question as to whether a person’s profession was
consistent with his/her educational level was also asked.
8. Main differences compared with the previous census:
Unemployed persons are identified, and
the definition of the economically active population has been included.
There are no questions concerning the place of work or
social group.
9. Publication of the census results:
Some
publications containing the census results are already available. The
main results are also available on the website of the Department for Statistics
(www.statistics.ge).
