1.Name and address of the organization responsible for the census:

2.Population censuses conducted since 1945 (years):

1961, 1971, 1980 and 1990. The present description relates to the 1990 census (held on 31 October).

3.Coverage of the census:

(a) Geographical scope

Whole country.

(b) Persons covered

All persons of all ages. The sample census excluded those who are living outside the enumeration area, i.e., those living in forests (primitives), shipmen sailing for more than six months and undwellers.

4.Reference period:

The week preceding the census day. Persons in the sample were also asked to specify whether they worked or not during the previous year.

5.Main topics:

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of age at last birthday.

Re (g): Hours of work relate both to usual hours of work of all employed persons and to actual hours of work of employed persons, at work.

Re (h): The census also collected information on: total number of hours worked in all jobs (i.e., main and additional); type of industry of the second job during the reference week; type of industry during the previous year; reason for not seeking work.

6.Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population

It comprises all persons aged 10 years and over in the sample who, during the reference week, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below. However, questions concerning economic activity were asked of a 5 per cent sample through multistage random sampling, households being the ultimate sample unit. Members of the armed forces are included in the definition.

(b) Employment

Considered as employed are all persons in the sample who, during the reference week, performed any work of an economic value, at home or out of home, for at least one hour. The questions used to determine if a person is to be counted as employed are Primary activity in the previous week: (1) Employed; (2) Attending school; (3) Housekeeping; (4) Other. and In addition to 2, 3 and 4, also worked for at least one hour during the previous week?.

It is reported that the following categories are included:

  1. persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business;
  2. persons engaged in the production of primary products for own consumption;
  3. employed persons, temporarily absent from work;
  4. working students with a part time job;
  5. seasonal or occasional workers;
  6. conscripts for military/civilian service;
  7. multiple job holders;
  8. apprentices and trainees.
Only persons belonging to categories (i), (iii), (iv) and (vii) can be identified separately.

(c) Unemployment

Considered as unemployed are all persons in the sample who, during the reference week, were without work and looking for work. The questions asked to respondents who hadn't worked for at least one hour during the previous week are Have you ever worked? and Did you look for work during the previous week?.

7.Classifications used:

Only employed persons in the sample are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.

(a) Industry

Based on the question: Please specify the type of industry in the primary activity during the previous week. For coding industry, 47 groups of the national classification were used. Links to the ISIC-rev.2 have been established to the division (2-digit) level.

(b) Occupation

Based on the question: Please specify your occupation in the primary activity during the previous week. For coding occupation, 334 groups of the national classification were used. Links to the ISCO-68 have been established to the unit group (3-digit) level.

(c) Status in employment

Based on the question: Please specify employment status in the primary activity during the previous week. For coding status in employment five groups were used: self-employed; self-employed assisted by family member or temporary help; employer; employee; unpaid family worker.

8.Main differences compared with the previous census:

No major difference.

9.Publication of the census results:

Advanced or provisional results were published in October 1991.

The title of the publication containing the final census results is The Results of the 1990 Population Census.

Raw census results are also available in the form of magnetic tapes or diskettes.
