1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 1999.  The present description relates to the 1999 population census (conducted from 25 February to 4 March 1999).

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of year of birth.

Re (h): The census also collected information on the place of work and on second occupation.

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population:

The economically active population comprises all persons aged 15 years and over who, at the time of the census, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below.  All members of the armed forces are included in the definition.

(b) Employment:


Considered as employed are all persons who, when asked about their means of livelihood, gave one of the following replies: job with contract; job without contract; in a factory; in a farm; in their own factory; self employed; in a family business without pay; or working on own piece of land.

 

It is reported that the following categories are included:

 

i)                persons doing unpaid work in a family firm or business;

ii)              persons engaged in the production of goods for own consumption;

iii)            employed persons, temporarily absent from work;

iv)             working students with a part-time job;

v)               seasonal workers not at work during the off-season;

vi)             regular members of the armed forces;

vii)           conscripts on military/civilian service;

viii)         apprentices and trainees;

ix)             persons temporarily laid-off (with formal job attachment).

(c) Unemployment:

Considered as unemployed are all persons without work, looking for a job and available to work. Based on the questions: AAre you looking for a job?  If yes, can you start to work in the next two weeks?@ and AIf you are not looking for a job, indicate why not (got a job and will start in less than two weeks; found a job but waiting for reply; involved in house duties; other)@.  Students seeking work and discouraged workers are excluded from the definition.  It is reported that future starts and persons temporarily laid-off (without formal job attachment) are included in the definition.

7. Classifications used:

Both employed and unemployed persons are classified by educational level. Only employed persons are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.

(a) Industry:

Based on the question: Please indicate your place of work (name of the enterprise, institution, organization), and the type of activity of the enterprise. For coding Industry, 40 groups of the national classification are used. Links to ISIC Rev.3 have been established at the division (2-digit) level.

(b) Occupation:

Based on the question: APlease indicate your main occupation@.  For coding occupation, 88 groups of the national classification are used. Links to ISCO-88 have been established at the minor group (3-digit) level.

(c) Status in employment:

This variable is coded according to the following five groups: Employee; Member of an industrial cooperative; Employer; Self employed; and Unpaid family worker.

(d) Level of education:

For coding level of education, ten groups of the national classification are used: Primary; Basic; Secondary; Primary technical; Secondary special; Higher education; Masters; PhD; Doctors degree; No formal education.  Links to ISCED-97 have been established.

8. Main differences compared with the previous census:

-           The category of unemployment and the status in employment classification have been introduced.

9. Publication of the census results:

The final results of the census, entitled A1999 Population Census@, were published during 2000/2001.
