6.Concepts and definitions:
(a) Economically active population
It comprises all employed persons aged 7 years and over, and all
unemployed persons aged 15 years and over who, on the date of the
census, were either employed or unemployed, according to the
definitions given below. The definition includes members of the
armed forces, but excludes working students with a part-time job
or seeking work.
(b) Employment
Considered as employed (working persons) are all persons
aged 7 years and over who, at the date of census, had a
job or an economic activity. The question asked to
determine whether a person is to be counted as employed is Did
you have a job on the census date?.
It is reported that the following categories are included:
- persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business;
- persons engaged in the production of primary products for own
consumption;
- employed persons, temporarily absent from work;
- seasonal or occasional workers, especially in agriculture;
- conscripts for military/civilian service;
- apprentices and trainees.
Only categories (i) (v) and (vi) can be identified separately.
(c) Unemployment
Considered as unemployed are all persons aged 15 years and
over who, at the date of census, were without work and seeking
work. The definition covers both unemployed persons previously
employed and first-time jobseekers.
7.Classifications used:
Both employed persons and unemployed persons previously employed
are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in
employment.
(a) Industry
The question asked concerns the main activity of the firm or
workplace in which the person works or last worked. For coding
industry, 215 groups of the national classification were used.
Links to the ISIC-rev.3 have been established to the class
(4-digit) level.
(b) Occupation
The question asked concerns the exact nature of the person's
current or most recent occupation. For coding occupation, more
than 65 groups of the national nomenclature were used. Links to
the ISCO-88 have been established.
(c) Status in employment
The question asked concerns the status in employment in the
current (or most recent) occupation. For coding status in
employment the following seven groups were used: employer;
self-employed, with own business premises; self-employed working
at home; self-employed with no premises; employee; family helper;
apprentice.
8.Main differences compared with the previous census:
The main difference concerns the updating of the nomenclatures
of occupations and economic activities.
9.Publication of the census results:
The final census data are to be published in 1995 in the
following publications: Population légale du Royaume and
Caractéristiques socio-économiques (niveau national et niveau
provincial de 65 provinces).

form of unpublished tables, diskettes and magnetic tapes.
