6.Concepts and definitions:
(a) Economically active population
It comprises all persons aged 16 to 59 for men, and 16 to 54 for
women, who were either employed or unemployed, according to the
definitions given below. The definition excludes members of the
armed forces. Working students with a part time job and students
seeking work are also excluded from the definition.
(b) Employment
Considered as employed are all persons aged 16 to 59 for
men, and 16 to 54 for women, who are on the Employment List of
any enterprise at the moment of the census.
It is reported that the following categories are included:
- persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business;
- persons engaged in the production of primary products for own
consumption;
- employed persons, temporarily absent from work;
- seasonal or occasional workers;
- apprentices and trainees.
None of these categories can be identified separately.
(c) Unemployment
Considered as unemployed are all persons aged 16 to 59 for
men, and 16 to 54 for women, who are not on the Employment List
of any enterprise at the moment of the census.
7.Classifications used:
Both employed persons and unemployed persons previously employed
are classified by occupation. Only employed persons are
classified by industry and by status in employment.
(a) Industry
12 groups of the national classification were used to determine
this variable: Industry; Agriculture; Construction; Transport;
Communication; Trade and Procurement; Housing and domestic
services; Sciences; Public health, physical culture; Insurance;
Culture, education, art; other. No links to the ISIC have been
established.
(b) Occupation
982 groups of the national classification were used for coding
this variable. No links to the ISCO have been established.
(c) Status in employment
For coding this variable, five groups were used, namely:
Government and administrative agencies (ministeries, boards);
public sector agencies; Aimag's (province) administrative
agencies; district's administrative agencies; enterprises.
8.Main differences compared with the previous census:
No major difference.
9.Publication of the census results:
The final census data on the economically active population and
its components were issued in March 1990 in a publication
entitled Population Census of Mongolia, 1989.
The organization responsible for the publication is the State
Statistical Office, Ulaan Baatar.
The census results are not available in other forms.
