Sudan

2.Population censuses conducted since 1945 (years):

1955-56, 1973, 1983 and 1993. The present description relates to the 1993 population census (held on 15 April).

3.Coverage of the census:

(a) Geographical scope

The three southern regions were only partially covered due to insurgency.

(b) Persons covered

All persons of all ages.

The week preceding the census day.

6.Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population

It comprises all persons aged 10 years and over who, during the reference week, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below. Armed forces are excluded from the definition, as well as working students with a part time job and students seeking work.

(b) Employment

Considered as employed are all persons who, during the reference week, did any job inside or outside their home for at least two days, with payment or without payment. Persons absent from work due to illness or leave are included in the definition.

It is reported that the persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business are included in the definition.

(c) Unemployment

Considered as unemployed are all persons who, during the reference week, did not any work and were looking for work or would have accepted a job if offered.

7.Classifications used:

Both employed persons and unemployed persons previously employed are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment. Questions on these topics were asked for all private households in urban areas and for 5% sample of private households in rural areas.

(a) Industry

For coding industry, the ISIC-rev.2 was used to the major group (3-digit) level.

(b) Occupation

For coding occupation, the ISCO-88 was used to the unit group (4-digit) level.

(c) Status in employment

For coding this variable, five groups were used, namely: employee; employer; own account worker; unpaid family worker; unpaid working for others.

8.Main differences compared with the previous census:

No major difference.

9.Publication of the census results:

The final data was issued in June 1995 in a publication entitled Fourth Population Census of Sudan. Final Tabulation.

The organization responsible for this publication is the Central Bureau of Statistics, P.O. Box 700, Khartoum.

The final results are also available in the form of unpublished tables, diskettes and magnetic tapes.
