7. Classifications used:

Only employed persons are classified by industry and by status in employment.  Employed persons are classified by current occupation and unemployed persons by main occupation.

(a) Industry:  Based on the questions: “In what kind of workplace did you work last week or where you continue to hold a job (e.g. field, Ministry of Justice, grocery, barber shop, etc.)?” and “What is the nature of work done at the workplace where you worked (e.g. public service, retail trade, manufacture of refrigerators, TV repairs, etc.)?”.  For coding industry, ISIC-rev.2 has been used.

(b) Occupation:  Based on the questions (i) to employed persons: “What is the kind of work you did last week or the job you continue to hold (e.g. farmer, bank manager, typist, construction worker, etc.)?” and (ii) to unemployed persons: “What is your main occupation (e.g. carpenter, lawyer, bricklayer, nurse, etc.)?”.    For coding occupation, ISCO-68 has been used.

(c) Status in employment:  Based on the question “What was your employment status in the job where you worked last week or where you continue to hold a job?”.   For coding status in employment, four groups were used: Employee; Employer; Self-employed; Unpaid family worker.

(d) Level of education:  Respondents were first asked “Are you literate?”.  Those who gave an affirmative answer were then asked “What is the last school you have completed?”.  To determine the level of education attained, the following ten categories were used: No school completed; Primary school; Primary education; Junior high school; Vocational school at junior high school level; High school; Vocational school at high school level; Higher education; Faculty; Master/Doctorate.  The national educational classification is linked to ISCED-97.
