1957, 1967, 1978, 1988 and 2002.  The present description relates to the 2002 population census (held on 25 August).

(a) Geographical scope:  Whole country.          

(b) Persons covered:  All persons of all ages.   

4. Reference period:

The week and the year preceding the census day.

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of age at last birthday.  

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population:  It comprises all persons aged five years and over who, during the reference period, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below.

(b) Employment:  Considered as employed are all persons who, during the reference period, worked for at least one hour on any of a wide range of economic activities or was temporarily absent from such activity.  The question used to determine whether a person is to be counted as employed is “What type of work did you perform during the last seven days/twelve months preceding the census day?”.

 

It is reported that the following categories are included:                                          

 

i)         persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business:          

ii)        persons engaged in production for own consumption:            

iii)       persons, temporarily absent from a job                                  

iv)       working students with a part-time job:                                   

v)         seasonal or occasional workers:                                            

vi)       conscripts for military/civilian service:                                 

vii)      apprentices and trainees:                                                        

Persons belonging to categories i), v) and vii) can be identified separately.

(c) Unemployment:  Considered as unemployed are all persons who, during the reference period, were without work (self or paid employment) and available for work but not necessarily seeking work.  The question used to determine whether a person is to be counted as unemployed is “What did you do in the last seven days?”.  Counted as unemployed are all those who replied either “Did not work, were available for work and actively seeking work” or “”Did not work, were available for work but were not actively seeking work”.  

7. Classifications used:

Only employed persons are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.           

(a) Industry:   Based on the question “What is the main activity of your work place for the last seven days?”.  For coding industry, eleven groups of the national classification were used.   Links to ISIC-rev.3 have been established at the division level.

(b) Occupation:  Based on the question “What type of work did you do for the last seven days?”.  For coding occupation, 15 groups of the national classification were used.    Links to ISCO-88 have been established at the major group level.

(c) Status in employment:  Based on the question “Were you an employer; employee; own account worker (non-agricultural); own account worker (agricultural); contributing family worker; apprentice; other?”.

 (d) Level of education:  Based on the question “What is the highest level of education you have completed?”.   For coding level of education the following groups were used:  Primary: Livel 0 – Level 8, Pre-secondary training;  Secondary: Form 1 – Form VI, Training after secondary, University and Other related.  Links to ISCED-97 have been established.          

8. Main differences compared with the previous census:

Data on industry was not collected in the previous census.

9. Publication of the census results:

The final results of the census will be published in “National Profile: Basic Demographic and Socio-economic characteristics (to be released in April 2004) and “Census Analytical Report” (to be released in June 2004).
