Members of the armed forces were covered, whether residing in private households or in barracks, and given a separate occupation code.
(b) Employment: Considered as employed are all persons who performed any work during the reference week. The question asked to determine whether a person should be counted as employed was: “What was (NAME’s) main activity status during the last seven days: self-employed; paid employee; unpaid family worker; looking for work; full-time student; household worker?”. Employed persons include self-employed, paid-employees and unpaid family workers. This question was asked of all persons aged five years and above.
It is reported that the following categories are included:
i) persons doing unpaid work in a family firm or business;
ii) working students with a part-time job;
iii) seasonal or occasional workers;
iv) conscripts for military service.
Categories (i), (ii) and (iv) can be identified separately.
(c) Unemployment: Considered as unemployed are all persons who, during the reference week, were without work and were looking for work. The question asked to determine whether a person should be counted as unemployed was the same as that indicated under 6(b) above.
Only employed persons were classified by industry and occupation.
(a) Industry: Based on the question: “What is the main economic activity in the place where (NAME) works?”. This question was asked only to household members who reported their activity status as self employed, paid employees and unpaid family workers.
(b) Occupation: Based on the question: "What kind of work did (NAME) do in the last seven days?”. This question was asked only to household members who reported their activity status as self employed, paid employees and unpaid family workers.
(c) Status in employment: Based on the question: “What was (NAME’s) main activity status during the last seven days?”. This question was asked to all household members aged five years and above. For coding status in employment, the following groups were used: self-employed; paid employees; unpaid family workers; looking for work; full time students; household workers.
(d) Level of education: Based on the following questions: “Did (NAME) attend school in 2002, leave school before 2002, or has never been to school?” and “What was the highest grade (NAME) completed?”. The data was not grouped but during analysis the data will be grouped according to ISCED-76.
The 2002 Population Census collected information on occupation in a different way, i.e. the enumerators described the occupation during enumeration.
The coding of occupation is being carried out in the Bureau of Statistics while in previous censuses it was done by the enumerators.
Employed persons were also classified by industry, which they were not in previous censuses.
The final results including the Population and Housing Census detailed results have not yet been published; the provisional results were, however, released in November 2002.
