2. Population censuses conducted since 1945 (years):

Two censuses were conducted in each of the two countries before their unification to form the Republic of Yemen, and one since the unification:

 

1973 and 1988 in the Southern and Eastern governorates i.e. former PDRY.

1975 and 1986 in the Northern and Western governorates i.e. former YAR.

The present description relates to the 1994 population census (held on 16 December), which is the first census for the unified country of the Republic of Yemen.

The next population census is scheduled to take place in December 2004.

(b) Persons covered:  All persons of all ages.

The week preceding the census day.

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of age at last birthday.

 

Re (h): The census also collected information on: duration (in complete years) in main occupation; secondary occupation; economic sector; migration and disability.

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population: It comprises all persons aged 10 years and over who, during the reference week, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below.  Members of the armed forces are included in the definition.

(b) Employment:  Employment is determined on the basis of the question “What was your relationship to the labour force during the reference week?”.  The possible responses were: 1) Working; 2) Housewife and working; 3) Student and working; 4) Unemployed but previously worked; 5) Unemployed but never worked; 6) Housewife; 7) Student; 8) Self-sufficient; 9) Disabled.  If a person stated that s/he had worked for two days or more, s/he was counted as employed.

It is reported that the following categories are included:

i)         persons doing unpaid work in family firm or business;

ii)        persons engaged in the production of primary products for own consumption;

iii)       employed persons, temporarily absent from work;

iv)       working students with a part-time job;

v)         seasonal or occasional workers (provided that they were employed during the reference period);

vi)       conscripts for military/civilian service;

vii)      multiple-job holders;

viii)     apprentices and trainees.

 

Persons belonging to categories (i), (iv), (vii) and (viii) can be identified separately.

(c) Unemployment:  Considered as unemployed are all persons who, during the reference week, worked for less than two days. The definition includes both first job seekers and unemployed persons previously employed.  However, students seeking work are excluded from the definition.

7. Classifications used:

Both employed persons and unemployed persons previously employed are classified by industry, by occupation and by status in employment.

(a) Industry:  Based on the questions “What is your present main occupation?” and “Where do you work?”.   For coding industry, ISIC-rev.3 has been used.

(b) Occupation:  Based on the question “What is your exact occupation?”.  For coding occupation, ISCO-88 has been used to the unit group (4-digit) level.

(c) Status in employment:  Based on the question “What is your status in employment?”.   For coding status in employment, five groups were used, namely: paid worker; self-employed; employer; unpaid family worker; unpaid working for others.

(d) Level of education:  For coding level of education the following groups were used: 1) Illiterate; 2) Read and write; 3) Primary; 4) Levels 1-8 (in South); 5) Preparatory; 6) Diploma before secondary; 7) Secondary; 8) Diploma after secondary;  9) University and above.

No major difference.

9. Publication of the census results:

The final data were published in 1996 in “The Results of the 1994 Population, Housing and Establishments Census, Reports No. 1-3”.

The final results are also available in the form of unpublished tables (printed as hard copy upon request).  As a privilege, results can be made available in a magnetic media upon request.
