Objectives and users
To assess levels of occupational injuries in various types of
economic activity and sectors, and assess losses due to
occupational injuries.
Major users:
Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Confederation of Trade
Unions and the Social Fund.
Coverage
Workers:
Paid employees. Temporary workers whose employment contracts do
not include provisions for occupational injuries are not covered.
In 1998, 578,048 workers were covered by the statistics.
Economic activities:
All types of economic activity and sectors.
Geographic areas:
The whole country.
All occupational injuries occurring within the country are
covered.
Establishments:
All types and sizes of establishments.
Types of occupational accidents covered
The statistics cover reported injuries due to all types of
occupational accidents, including commuting accidents.
Until 1996, statistics of occupational diseases were compiled and
published together with the statistics of occupational injuries.
From 1997 onwards, they have been compiled and published
separately.

Measurement of worktime lost
Worktime lost is measured in workdays for all occupational
injuries including fatal injuries, as follows:
- temporary incapacity to work: the number of workdays absent
from work as indicated in the injury report;
- permanent incapacity to work: the number of workdays of
absence from work, up to a maximum of six months;
- fatal injury: the number of workdays absent from work up to
the time of death, as indicated in the injury report.
Temporary absences for medical treatment are counted as worktime
lost, and measured in workdays.

Yearbook of Labour Statistics,
relating to reported injuries (including commuting
accidents) according to economic activity: number of persons
fatally injured, number of persons injured with lost worktime,
total of these two groups; number of workdays lost by persons
injured; rates of fatal injuries. The number of persons at risk
(total number of paid employees) is also furnished and stored in
the LABORSTA data base.

Universe of the survey:
The register of businesses and organizations covering all sizes
of enterprise and organization. Until 1996, the survey was
conducted once a year; since 1997, it has been conducted twice a
year.

The survey is based on a complete enumeration.
Field work:
The data are provided by the employer. They are collected by
means of statistical forms and questionnaire which are sent to
the survey units. They are collected and processed from January
to March and from July to September.

The information is processed by computer.
