Considering the small proportions of people working in the formal economy in most African countries, MICSEC realized the need to investigate and develop alternative approaches for extending the social security coverage of migrant workers and their families. The lesson learnt from the studies conducted under MIGSEC’s sponsorship is that community based initiatives are important alternative sources of social protection.
