Key MRC staff benefitted from the FAIRWAY symposium (September 2023) on learning from Asian counterparts, which included examples of how children and young people can continue being supported while a mother is working abroad. MRCs continue to engage various stakeholders in this conversation. National government and local leaders are also engaged, including through efforts to find community-level solutions and ensuring that the MRC is linked to a network of institutions that could provide support services. Migrant workers are beginning to get awareness of and training on platforms that can be accessed by smart phones in or out of the country where they exist (such as NEAMIS in Kenya). In Kenya, this is part of their pre-departure training. In Nigeria, there is now a project partner/stakeholder discussion around how to develop a similar platform or to upgrade the NELEX platform by offering a dedicated link to migrant protection and support features that will make it a value adding tool to migrant workers abroad. Pre-departure training is delivered through different mechanisms in different countries. For example, MRCs in Kenya do not offer pre-departure training. This is offered by training institutions that are licensed by governments to do so. However, MRCs work very closely with the training institutions. In Nigeria, MRCs offer pre-departure training, and a dedicated PDOT training manual has been developed by the government with support from the FAIRWAY Project. Gender responsive employability, advisory and financial education trainings for direct beneficiaries are also being offered by the MRCs in Nigeria. ILO continues to support the origin countries that are currently working to develop national migrant return and re-integration policies and programmes that facilitate sustainable and inclusive reintegration for returning migrant workers.
