In Madagascar, where the international programme manager left in February 2024 and the two national programme officers went on maternity leave in spring 2024, Better Work Global has designated a team member to support the liaison with the EU Delegation. Other team members have provided technical advice and input as needed to these discussions. The team in Madagascar was kept on contract until December 2024 as well, to continue the discussion with the EU Delegation about future funding. In Madagascar, the bridging phase has enabled the programme to secure additional funding to support a new development cooperation initiative - the "Better Work Madagascar, Phase 2: For Fairer, More Resilient, and Sustainable Supply Chains" project (2025-2029) - led by the ILO in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Madagascar to responds to needs expressed by the constituents and other key industry stakeholders to advance decent work and inclusive industrialisation in key priority sectors. The MoU signature is planned for June 2025. In Sri Lanka, the Better Work Global team covered the salary of the international programme manager until December 2024, so six months beyond the project duration funded by the EU. The main purpose of this support was to allow for continuation of discussions with the EU, but also other potential donors for funding for the programme beyond 2024. In Sri Lanka, this bridging phase enabled the programme to secure additional funding from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to support a thematic intervention (2025-2027) aimed at strengthening workplace inclusion and the employability of people with disabilities. The agreement was signed in 2024.

1. Maintain close contacts with the EU Delegations in Madagascar and Sri Lanka in a possible formulation and planning for a second phase. An important element in this phase will be the adherence to the new EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) which was agreed by the European Council last week and is expected to be endorsed by the European Parliament in April 2024. In the meantime, discuss with BW Global the possibility of a bridging fund from July 2024 to keep the momentum of the present BW Programmes in the two countries going until a new phase starts; this will only be possible if there are solid indications that continued funding after the bridging period will indeed materialize.
