The present Volume 1 of Sources and Methods: Labour Statistics presents methodological descriptions of the main characteristics of national series of consumer price indices. It is a revised, enlarged and updated version of the third edition issued in 1992 and contains descriptions for 169 countries, areas and territories.
The volume has two main purposes: first, to provide basic information on the sources and methods used in each of the series of consumer price indices published by the ILO, so as to enhance their usefulness for different purposes; and, second, to indicate the differences between the national series with regard to their scope, concepts, definitions, classification and weights, sample design, data collection, computation, editing and validation procedures, and dissemination.
The descriptions presented here were prepared on the basis of information provided by national statistical agencies or governments in response to a specially designed questionnaire on CPI. In some cases, the information was collected from information published on the respective website of the National Statistical Office (NSO) or the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Special Data Dissemination Standard. The sources of information are indicated at the end of each description. The descriptions have been structured and presented with nine standard headings for the different characteristics in order to make international comparisons easier.
